If there is one wine that is synonymous with Napa Valley royalty, it is Opus One. Founded in 1979 by Napa godfather Robert Mondavi and Bordeaux elite Baron Philippe de Rothschild (of first growth Château Mouton-Rothschild), Opus One has been the stalwart, standard bearer for Napa Valley fine wine ever since. Located in Oakville and controlling much of the vaunted To-Kalon vineyard, these Cabernet Sauvignon based wines rank among the most elite in the world. Sparing no expense in their ultra-modern facilities which include gravity fed fermentation vats and optical sorting machines, the wines of Opus One are produced in a more Bordeaux style with polish and distinction. This is a wine that is instantly recognizable worldwide as a symbol of prestige and luxury. Despite market pressures from newer Napa Valley “cult wines”, Opus One remains highly coveted and is a must in any serious collector’s cellar. Opus One also produces a highly distinguished second wine called Overture.
