Scarecrow
Established in 2003, and a relative newcomer to the California cult scene, Scarecrow Cabernet Sauvignon is already such a powerhouse that it holds the title of the most expensive California Cabernet ever sold at auction (2014 Scarecrow “Toto’s Opium Dream, Scene III). This meteoric rise to fame traces back to 1945 when John Daniel Jr. (the original owner of Dominus), planted Cabernet vines on an auspicious plot of land owned by his friend J.J. Cohn, the famous Hollywood movie producer of such classics as “Ben Hur” and “The Wizard of Oz”. For years the family sold its fruit to top producers such as Phelps Insignia, Opus One, and Robert Mondavi Reserve until Bret Lopez, grandson of J.J. Cohen took control of 25 acres of the vineyard, hired esteemed wine maker and consultant Celia Masyczek as wine maker and created Scarecrow in honor of his grandfather’s favorite project “The Wizard of Oz”. These are now the oldest Cabernet Sauvignon vines in Napa Valley and are so legendary that Scarecrow was immediately catapulted into the pantheon of best, most collectible wines in the world.
