If there is one wine that exemplifies the “Cult Wine” movement in California it is Screaming Eagle. Founder, Jean Philips, a successful realtor in Napa Valley founded Screaming Eagle in 1986 and debuted their first vintage in 1992 to immediate acclaim. Located in Oakville, within two short years, these wines were at the top of the hot list of CA Cab Blends. These wines are notoriously difficult to find given the miniscule production (~1000 cases) and enormous demand (the wine is almost exclusively sold to their devout mailing list customers). This has pushed prices of this near mythical wine to the stratosphere. These high prices are backed up by a stalwart commitment to producing the finest wine in the world, as witnessed by much of their 2017 harvest being declassified and allotted for their second wine Second Flight. Now owned by billionaire Stan Kroenke, Screaming Eagle spares no expense in producing wine of luscious texture and hedonistic purity of fruit while carefully positioning this commodity-like investment worthy wine as one of the world’s most coveted.
